Little T’s Intro To Bra Making
For a long while, making my own underwear seemed like a big daunting task! First came a foray into knickers, I fell in love with the Stitch Upon A Time Scrundlewear Pattern and soon found myself trying out lots of different fabrics and trimmings. There’s a reason we stock such a wide range of elastics and trims here at Little T’s – it’s because I adore sewing with them myself!
For 2019 I planned to expand our elastics and trimmings suitable for underwear by adding a range of Bra Making Supplies too. I gathered so many samples and explored different brands and sizes to finally come up with a range I was happy with, that would allow my lovely customers to get the best possible finishes for their projects!
Above you can see a small selection of our Bra Making Supplies – from left to right: Hook and Eye Bra Closures (available in black and white in three different sizes), our expanded range of Foldover Scallop Edge Elastic (available in 13 lovely colours!), Rings and Sliders (available in black and white and two different sizes), Satin Shoulder Strap Elastic and new 20mm Prym Super Soft Elastic.
The next step, actually sewing a bra (!) was even more intimidating but I was so inspired by all of the beautiful matching bra and knicker sets I saw other talented sewists sharing, that I couldn’t not give it a try! I ended up deciding to go with the newly released Lana Bra pattern from Made for Mermaids, mostly for the range of sizes offered. It gave a clear list of materials needed and even a guide on adjusting the pattern to help it best fit to your measurements.
I chose to make the bra using our almond coloured Galloon Stretch Lace, with the rose pink Satin Shoulder Strap Elastic, white Foldover Scallop Edge Elastic for the edging of the cups and the Prym Velour Elastic in 15mm for the band plus the white 14mm Rings and Sliders and the 37mm white Hook and Eye closures. You can see from the photos below that I took whilst sewing the bra, that my Wonder Clips were used an awful lot – at times sewing through a bunch of thick layers, pins would certainly not have worked as well. I was really happy with the finished result – I hope you all agree that it looks great! It fits well too and I can’t wait to make another!
After I had chosen the new range of Bra Making Supplies, I sent some over to our lovely team of testers to try out. Here are a couple of photos of the bra’s they made, both using jersey as opposed to the Galloon Lace version I made. I love how they both turned out!
